Welcome to Rethinking Workplace Conflict

I'm glad you're here.

I’m Sarah Albo, MBA, PHSA, QMed, founder of Novel HR. I help managers prevent destructive workplace conflict by making Psychological Health and Safety practical, accessible, and easy to apply. I write, teach, and design tools that help leaders in Canadian SMEs and nonprofits build psychologically safer teams—so they can handle conflict with more clarity, confidence, and calm.

I didn’t start as a conflict expert. I started as an employee and then a manager who felt unprepared, a bit overwhelmed, and afraid of making things worse. I learned quickly that conflict isn’t just a people problem—it’s a psychological safety problem.

That belief changed how I work—and now shapes everything I teach.

What I write about:

Not generic HR theory. Not abstract leadership advice. Definitely not “just be more empathetic.” Just simple, real-world tools for real managers:

- Conversation scripts for conflict that build trust—not tension - Psychological safety assessment tools you can actually use - Early warning signs of conflict most managers miss - How to know when to step in vs. when to give space - How to use Canada’s National Standard at the team level (without reading the 60+ page document)

I write for managers who care—but weren’t formally trained. The ones who want to do the right thing, but don’t want to get it wrong. The ones who were told to “build trust” and “handle conflict,” but were never shown how to actually do it.

If you’ve ever thought:

“I want to handle this conflict better… but I don’t want to make it worse.” or “I wish someone would just tell me what to say in these conversations.”

You’re in the right place.

What I believe:

Most workplace conflict is preventable.

Conflict is not always bad—but unmanaged (destructive) conflict always is.

Managers don't need to fix everything—they just need to intervene at the right time, in the right way.

Psychological safety is not a buzzword. It’s a practical, measurable system that can be applied to daily leadership.

You don’t need years of training—just the right structure and a little confidence.

What you’ll find here:

The Psychological Health & Safety Informed Leadership Course — a self paced training that includes ready-to-use tools for preventing conflict. The Managing Conflict with Psychological Health & Safety Guide - learn how to apply Canada’s National Standard for your team - includes a 20-question assessment. Templates, scorecards, and real conflict scripts based on actual scenarios - here's a Cost of Conflict Calculator so you can see what destructive workplace conflict is really costing your organization. Reflection tools and workplace diagnostics you can do without HR - take the Workplace Conflict Style Assessment quiz to see what your default responses are in difficult conversations.

My goal is simple:

To help managers feel calmer, clearer, and more confident in handling conflict—using practical tools grounded in Canada’s National Standard of Psychological Health & Safety.

So that people don’t avoid problems… They address them. Safely. Early. Respectfully.

If you’re ready to strengthen trust, reduce conflict, and lead with psychological safety—you are in the right place.
